A bus transporting migrants to Beitbridge overturned on South Africa’s N1 highway in the early hours of Wednesday morning, killing the driver and injuring 11 passengers, the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety has confirmed.
The crash occurred at about 1:30am, roughly four kilometres south of the Beitbridge Border Post near Musina.
According to preliminary information, the driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle, reportedly after becoming fatigued.
The bus overturned, trapping the passengers and prompting an immediate emergency response.
In a statement, the department said the driver was declared dead at the scene. The injured passengers were rushed to Musina Hospital for treatment.
Authorities said the nationalities of those hurt had not yet been established at the time of reporting.
The bus was reportedly travelling from KwaZulu-Natal toward Musina, as part of the continued movement of foreign nationals leaving South Africa amid rising anti-migrant tensions in some areas.
Both the Malawi and Zimbabwe governments are currently coordinating the evacuation and repatriation of some of their citizens from KwaZulu-Natal and other parts of the country.
Emergency services, police and traffic officials were on site managing traffic and assisting the injured.
The department said the road remains open, but motorists may face temporary closures while forensic investigators work, with delays expected along the route.
Motorists were urged to reduce speed, maintain a safe following distance, and obey instructions from officials at the scene.
Investigations into the cause of the accident are continuing, and further updates are expected.
