DJ Ollah 7 Responds Amid Podcast Backlash: “Podcasts Are Not Traditional Media”

DJ Ollah 7 Responds Amid Podcast Backlash: “Podcasts Are Not Traditional Media” – DJ Ollah 7 has responded on X (formerly Twitter) after facing widespread criticism over his explicit interview with Mai Jeremaya.

The backlash erupted following the release of the podcast episode, prompting Ollah to publicly defend his approach to content creation.

He explained that podcasts differ from traditional media, offering guests more freedom and less censorship.

“Podcasting is still relatively new in Zimbabwe,” he wrote. “People need to understand that it’s totally different from traditional media. It doesn’t operate like a radio or TV station.”

He argued that podcasts give guests the freedom to speak their minds in ways mainstream platforms do not.

The backlash comes after Ollah’s two-hour episode with controversial socialite Mai Jeremaya, where she revisited previously dismissed r@pe allegations and openly discussed her s£xual history, including infidelity and accepting money from other men.

The lack of content warnings and age restrictions has sparked outrage both on social media and in professional circles, with many calling the interview unethical and insensitive.

In his statement, DJ Ollah stressed that guests are not coerced into interviews.

“People book in advance to be slotted in. We have the numbers and we’ve got the skill. We tell our guests in advance what topics will be discussed, including A, B, C, and D. They are free to decline any questions.”

He also encouraged critics to compare his content with international podcasts, suggesting that Zimbabwean audiences are not yet accustomed to the raw, unfiltered nature of the format.

“If you watch some of the international podcasts and compare with what we’re doing here, you’ll see that hapana kana zvatati taita (we haven’t even gone that far),” he added.

However, Ollah’s response has done little to quell public concerns.

Many viewers remain uneasy about the deeply personal and s£xually explicit questions he asked, such as when Mai Jeremaya lost her virginity and whether her husband, JMP, still requests intimacy.

Critics say the approach lacked sensitivity, especially in light of Mai Jeremaya’s past trauma and mental health struggles.
