Declassified CIA Files Reveal UFO Sighting Over Harare Airport in 2008 – Newly declassified United States government documents have revealed that a reported unidentified flying object (UFO) sighting over Harare International Airport in 2008 triggered heightened attention from the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
The incident, which occurred on July 2, 2008, is detailed in a CIA cable that was recently made public as part of a new batch of UFO-related files released under a declassification order issued by US President Donald Trump.

According to the document, an unidentified object was observed hovering over Harare International Airport, now known as Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport.
The CIA report stated that the craft “hovered at an undetermined altitude directly over the Harare airport,” prompting concern among observers.
The sighting was reportedly significant enough for the information to be circulated across various levels of the US government and military during the final months of former President George W. Bush’s administration.
The declassified report also reveals that witnesses were unable to determine the nature or origin of the object.
“Individuals debated if the sighting was an advanced reconnaissance device of a foreign government or of extraterrestrial origins,” the CIA report said.
The document further noted unusual observations made during the incident.
“At one point during observation, ‘beams’ were observed emanating from the object,” the report added.
The Harare sighting is among dozens of cases contained in the latest release of files by US authorities relating to what the Pentagon refers to as Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAPs).
The newly released documents include reports, witness statements, videos and illustrations of unexplained aerial sightings dating back to the 1940s.
While the declassified files do not provide a definitive explanation for the object seen above Harare, the incident remains one of the notable African cases included in the latest batch of UFO records released by the United States government.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth said the release of the files was intended to improve transparency.
“These files, hidden behind classifications, have long fueled speculation — and it’s time the American people see it for themselves,” he said.
