Dairy Farm Faces Allegations of Animal Cruelty, Investigation Underway

UK – Undercover footage has exposed allegations of severe animal abuse at Lowfields Farm in Northallerton, a supplier to the UK’s largest milk producer.
The disturbing footage reveals abuse of newborn calves, use of pipes and tail-twisting on cows and neglect of injured animals.
The farm is part of a cooperative linked to Arla Foods, a major milk processor.
According to Animal Justice Project, the charity behind the investigation, the treatment was “routine” and tolerated within farm operations.
“This investigation exposes the brutal, hidden reality these animals face daily in milk production,” Claire Palmer, the charity’s director, emphasized.
Arla Foods has suspended the farm and initiated an investigation, employing independent auditors to review welfare conditions.
The company stressed that animal welfare is a top priority. “We take a zero-tolerance approach. The actions shown in this footage are completely unacceptable,” said a spokesperson for Arla Foods.
Experts have weighed in on the findings, with Alick Simmons, former UK deputy chief veterinary officer, calling the mistreatment “deeply concerning.”
North Yorkshire Council has also launched its own investigation into alleged animal mistreatment.
“We take all allegations seriously and will not hesitate to take action,” said Karl Battersby, the council’s corporate director of environment.
