Cyclone Gezani Spares Zim But Expect Weather Shifts, Warns MSD

The Meteorological Services Department of Zimbabwe has ruled out the possibility of Tropical Cyclone Gezani entering Zimbabwe, but warns that the system will still influence national weather patterns in the coming days.

In a statement recently, the weather authority said Cyclone Gezani, currently active in the southwest Indian Ocean, weakened into a Severe Tropical Storm earlier in the day, although it is expected to re-intensify as it tracks west-southwest away from Madagascar.

“As of this morning, Gezani has weakened to a Severe Tropical Storm but is expected to re-intensify as it moves west-southwest away from Madagascar,” the MSD stated.

The department said the storm’s projected path shows it approaching the coast of Mozambique briefly before veering southward into the southern Indian Ocean.

“The system is projected to briefly approach the coast of Mozambique before turning southward into the southern Indian Ocean, where it is likely to dissipate,” reads part of the update.

While the cyclone poses no direct threat to Zimbabwe, its indirect effects are already being felt.

“While the cyclone is not expected to enter Zimbabwe, its effects will be felt across the country.

“Currently, the system is drawing moisture away from Zimbabwe, contributing to dry conditions over the western areas,” the MSD said.

The department also indicated that rainfall may return mid-month as the storm shifts further south in the Mozambican Channel.

“As the storm moves further south in the Mozambican Channel, a moisture band may form, bringing rainfall to Zimbabwe from 15 to 17 February 2026,” the statement added.

The MSD urged farmers, travellers and the public to remain alert, saying it will continue to monitor Cyclone Gezani and issue updates when necessary.
