Cousins Who Defied Family to Marry Found Dead in Ghaziabad Apartment

INDIA – A young couple, who were also cousins, were found dead in their rented apartment in Ghaziabad on Tuesday, allegedly due to fears of family rejection over their marriage.
The couple, came from the same village in Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh, had tied the knot without their families’ consent.
According to police, the couple had been living together in Ghaziabad since February 18.
They reportedly ended their lives fearing ostracization from their families, a reflection of the social stigma associated with same-village marriages in some parts of India.
Station House Officer (SHO) Yogendra Malik of Kavinagar stated, “They feared that their families would not accept them and so ended their lives.”
The police added that a three-page suicide note recovered at the scene confirmed the couple’s reasons for taking this step.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Swatantra Kumar Singh said authorities received information about the deaths around 4 p.m. on Tuesday. Upon arriving at the scene, officers had to forcibly break open the apartment door to recover the bodies.
The couple’s remains have been sent for post-mortem examination.
Police are also investigating the contents of the suicide note and are in contact with the families for further insights.
The tragic incident underscores the societal pressures and deeply rooted norms around marriage in certain communities, which continue to cost lives.
