Couple Cycles Across Africa

Thandolwenkosi Tshuma, 29, from Zimbabwe and her boyfriend, Vusumuzi Mkandhla, are living their shared dream of cycling across Africa.

They kicked off their journey in Soweto in April 2024, and six months later, they’re still pedaling strong and soaking in the adventure.

“Being on the road brings unique challenges,” says Thandolwenkosi. “From saddle sores and tough hills to dealing with period pains and finding respectful camping spots—it’s all part of the journey as a woman cyclist.”

The couple set out to explore Africa, learn about its history and cultures, and inspire fellow Africans to appreciate the continent.

So far, they’ve covered nearly 8,600 kilometers across more than 116 days, receiving support from communities along the way. Currently in Uganda, they credit their journey for keeping them fit and focused.

“We avoid fatty foods, stay hydrated, and don’t give up,” she shares. “I’m cycling alongside my brave, adventurous boyfriend, and every day we strive to be better.”

For Thandolwenkosi, cycling across Africa is a dream come true. “This journey feels like the road trips of my high school days, only better because I’m doing it with the person I love,” she says. “I hope all Africans embrace exercise for a healthier lifestyle.”

After traveling through South Africa, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, and Rwanda, they’re now heading for Kenya. Couple Cycles Across Africa

Season two of their African tour kicks off in January 2025, with plans to tackle North and West Africa, including Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, and Senegal.
