Cop’s Trial Stalls After Dramatic Courtroom Collapse

The attempted murder trial of Beitbridge police officer Ziggie Khonzani was thrown into disarray yesterday after he dramatically slumped in the dock, claiming to be unwell just as proceedings were set to begin.

Khonzani, accused of viciously attacking a butchery till operator with a beer bottle, buried his face in his arms, prompting Regional Magistrate Charity Maphosa to postpone the hearing to May 14.

The officer allegedly assaulted Valentine Venge, a till operator, following a dispute over change for a US$20 note.

Venge had told Khonzani he had no smaller denominations when the cop attempted to purchase goods worth US$3.

Despite Venge offering to adjust the total to US$5, and then US$10, Khonzani allegedly flew into a rage.

He is said to have smashed a beer bottle in his hands against Venge’s head, causing serious injuries to his ear and lower jaw.

The victim was rushed to Beitbridge District Hospital for emergency treatment.

According to NewsDay, the violent altercation escalated over something as trivial as loose change — a chilling reminder of how quickly ordinary encounters can spiral into brutality.

Prosecutor Tsitsi Mutukwa is leading the State’s case, while Matthew Mapepa of Masawi and Associates is representing Khonzani.

The trial is now set for May 14, with anticipation high over how the dramatic case will unfold.
