Convicted R@pist Recaptured After Failed ‘Prison Break’ at Harare Magistrates Court
Convicted R@pist Recaptured After Failed ‘Prison Break’ at Harare Magistrates Court – A convicted rapist and robber serving a 45-year prison sentence was swiftly recaptured on Tuesday after attempting a daring escape at the Harare Magistrates Court.
Itai Madhongo (33) allegedly attacked a prison officer with a sharp object while being taken to court on fresh charges. He reportedly overpowered the officer, took his uniform and keys, and handcuffed him to a metal bar inside the court building in an attempt to disguise himself and flee.

The escape attempt was short-lived. Court officials confirmed that Madhongo was apprehended moments later while walking through a corridor leading to the magistrates’ offices, still disguised as a prison officer.
“He had a bunch of keys on him, which we suspect he took from the prison officer,” a prosecutor said.
Madhongo, who resides at Churu Farm in Glen View, is serving a lengthy sentence following his conviction for a series of rapes and house robberies. His brother, Simon Madhongo (37), was also jailed for his role in the crime spree.
The incident triggered a security alert shortly after midday, forcing authorities to temporarily close the court building. Reinforcements, including additional prison officers and a sniffer dog unit, were deployed as part of the response.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
