City of Harare Choked by ZiG8 Billion Debt Crisis

The City of Harare is reeling under a ballooning debt of more than ZiG8 billion owed by ratepayers, sparking fears of crippled service delivery.

According to the latest Debtor’s Age Analysis Report presented by Acting Head of Revenue Alfred Guni, residential property owners owe ZiG5 billion, the commercial sector ZiG1.09 billion, and industry ZiG1.05 billion.

The Government itself owes ZiG167 million, while ZESA accounts for ZiG455 million, dormitory towns ZiG345 million, parastatals ZiG64 million, and municipal property tenants ZiG58 million. Sundry accounts add another ZiG31 million.

City officials warned that urgent recovery measures are underway, urges ratepayers to settle as soon as possible to avoid inconveniences of business closures and residents losing their properties through court orders.
