Chris Hughton Among Front-Runners for Zimbabwe Warriors Coaching Job

Chris Hughton Among Front-Runners for Zimbabwe Warriors Coaching Job – The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has confirmed receiving over 300 applications for the vacant Warriors head coach position, with former Tottenham Hotspur, Brighton & Hove Albion, and Ghana national team manager Chris Hughton among the notable candidates.

Hughton, a respected figure in international football management, is widely recognised for his calm leadership style and track record in rebuilding teams.

Born in Forest Gate, England, in 1958, the 66-year-old football tactician represented the Republic of Ireland during his playing days, earning 53 international caps.

After a 13-year playing career at Tottenham Hotspur, Hughton transitioned into coaching in 1993, later serving as assistant and caretaker manager for Spurs.

His breakthrough in management came at Newcastle United, where he led the club back to the Premier League in 2010. Hughton also enjoyed success at Brighton & Hove Albion, guiding them to top-flight promotion in 2017 for the first time in the club’s history.

More recently, Hughton managed the Ghana national team from 2023 to 2024, following his earlier role as the Black Stars’ technical advisor during the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

According to ZIFA officials, the Warriors’ coaching vacancy has attracted a blend of local and international applicants, reflecting renewed interest in Zimbabwe’s national football revival.

“The number and quality of applicants show that the Warriors brand still holds great respect across the football world,” a ZIFA authority said.

“We are taking our time to ensure the best candidate is selected — someone who can restore pride and competitiveness to our national team.”
