Chivayo sets record straight on lobola costs

Chivayo sets record straight on lobola costs – Flamboyant businessman Wicknell Chivayo has dismissed claims that he paid a staggering US$300,000 in lobola for his bride, Lucy Muteke.

Chivayo clarified that while the entire ceremony was an extravagant affair, the actual lobola payment was far lower than widely circulated.

Breaking Down the Costs

Speaking to H Metro, Chivayo revealed that the US$300,000 figure making rounds on social media was the total amount spent on the event, not just the lobola itself.

The sum covered entertainment, decor, drinks, and overall expenses to create a grand and memorable occasion. He emphasized that his in-laws were reasonable and did not demand an exorbitant price for their daughter’s hand in marriage.

“I sent a messenger with US$50,000 to handle negotiations, ensuring all customary requirements were met. Later, I received a call confirming that not only had everything been covered, but there was a lot of change left over,” he explained.

To prevent any financial hiccups, Chivayo carried an extra US$75,000 in his vehicle, but this precautionary cash was ultimately not needed. He estimated that the actual lobola payment did not exceed US$20,000.

A Lavish Celebration Fit for Royalty

Despite the modest lobola amount, Chivayo spared no expense in transforming the Marondera venue into a breathtaking setting. The décor, designed by renowned wedding planner Kevin Zhou, featured striking burnt orange and blue hues, giving the space the elegance of an Italian villa.

The star-studded event was hosted by MC Maimba Mapuranga and featured performances from some of Zimbabwe’s top musicians, including Jah Prayzah, Killer T, Enzo Ishall, and the Travellerz Band.

Chivayo’s Take on the Lobola Negotiations

Prior to the ceremony, Chivayo updated his followers on social media, detailing his no-nonsense approach to the negotiations. He instructed his messenger to avoid drawn-out price haggling and instead request a total amount upfront to settle everything swiftly.

“I told my messenger, ‘We’re not here for endless discussions. Tell them, ‘Mukuwasha wants to marry your daughter, so please just give us a final figure—everything included—so we don’t waste time.’”

He humorously added: “I have other problems, not money. I love your daughter, so let’s not complicate things with unnecessary negotiations.”

Final Word

While Chivayo acknowledged spending a substantial amount on the overall event, he reiterated that the actual lobola was nowhere near US$300,000. Instead, most of the money went into making the occasion an unforgettable celebration, reflecting his larger-than-life personality.
