Chitungwiza Town Council to Euthanize Stray Dogs Over Rising Safety Concerns

HARARE – The Chitungwiza Town Council has announced plans to capture and euthanize all stray dogs without owners to protect residents from health risks and potential dog attacks.

This move is part of a broader strategy to address the growing concerns over stray dog populations in Zimbabwe’s major cities, with authorities citing the increased risk of rabies outbreaks and pedestrian safety as primary reasons for taking action.

Local councils across Zimbabwe have struggled to control the growing stray dog population.

In Masvingo, city officials recently considered seeking assistance from the Zimbabwe National Army following reports of 87 dog bite cases earlier this year.

The alarming rise in dog attacks raised fears of a potential rabies outbreak, prompting swift intervention by local authorities.

The decision by Chitungwiza Town Council follows recommendations from the city’s Health, Housing, and Environmental Committee to reduce stray dog attacks and health risks.

Authorities insist the decision is crucial for protecting public health, although some residents and animal welfare groups have called for alternative solutions such as sterilization programs or designated shelters instead of euthanasia.

As reported by Ignite Media Zimbabwe, councils nationwide are struggling to balance public safety with humane animal control measures.

Officials continue seeking solutions that balance public safety with ethical animal control strategies as the debate over the best approach continues.
