Chipinge Prison Inmate Attends Daughter’s Lobola Ceremony Under Escort

Chipinge Prison Inmate Attends Daughter’s Lobola Ceremony Under Escort – A female inmate was granted permission to attend her daughter’s lobola ceremony in Chipinge under the supervision of prison officials.

Sarah Simango, who is currently serving a four-year jail term for robbery, was escorted from Chipinge Prison to Gaza medium-density suburb where traditional Ndau marriage proceedings were held between her daughter, Patience Sibiya, and the family of Tafadzwa Usore.

Speaking after the ceremony, Simango expressed gratitude for being allowed to witness the important family occasion.

She said she had feared missing one of the most significant moments in her daughter’s life.

“I thought I would miss this special day completely. Being present meant a lot to me and my daughter,” she said.

During the ceremony, Usore’s family reportedly fulfilled traditional marriage customs by paying lobola and presenting groceries in line with Ndau cultural practices.

Chipinge Prison rehabilitation officer, Correctional Officer Grade One McDonald Garapo, who attended the event, said the gesture demonstrated the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service’s commitment to rehabilitation and humane treatment of inmates.

He said respecting inmates’ family ties and dignity forms part of the correctional service’s rehabilitation approach.

Following the ceremony, Simango was escorted back to prison.

Prison officials said the arrangement had inspired hope among other inmates, showing that under certain circumstances, family responsibilities can still be accommodated through supervised visits.
