Chinese Man Appears in Harare Court After Alleged Crystal Meth Bust
A Chinese national was arrested in Harare on July 11 after police received a tip-off alleging he was in possession of dangerous drugs.
The suspect, Zheng Chunping, was intercepted by detectives from the CID Drugs and Narcotics unit at the entrance of Peackwood Village, a gated community along Cecil Road.
Prosecutors said detectives arrived around 6:30 a.m and waited for Chunping to return home. He arrived driving a black BMW X6 and was stopped at the gate, where officers identified themselves before conducting a search.
One sachet of methylenedioxymethamphetamine commonly known as crystal meth was allegedly recovered from his trouser pocket, and a second sachet was found concealed inside the vehicle’s driver-side door panel.
Further searches were carried out inside the suspect’s residence, but no additional drugs were recovered.
Chunping was escorted to CID Drugs and Narcotics headquarters, where the seized substances were tested and confirmed to be crystal meth.
As reported by the Herald, Chunping appeared before Harare magistrate Ruth Moyo over the weekend, charged with unlawful possession of dangerous drugs.
He was not asked to plead, and the matter is still under investigation.
Following his release from police custody, immigration officials detained Chunping to verify his legal status in Zimbabwe.
