China Donates 5,000 Tonnes of Rice to Zimbabwe to Aid Vulnerable Communities

Zimbabwe has received 5,000 metric tonnes of rice from China to help vulnerable people and strengthen the country’s social safety nets.

The Chinese ambassador to Zimbabwe, His Excellency Zhou Ding, handed the rice to Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister Edgar Moyo.

The donation is part of China’s ongoing support for Zimbabwe’s food security and aid programmes.

Ambassador Zhou said China acted quickly in 2024 when Zimbabwe declared a state of national disaster because of El Niño.

He described the food donation as a sign of strong friendship and continued support to help Zimbabwe build agricultural resilience.

Minister Moyo said the rice will help the elderly, people with disabilities, child-headed households and other vulnerable groups.

He added the shipment will boost government efforts to ease food shortages and lessen the impact of climate-related problems.

The donation follows an agreement made in August last year, when the two countries exchanged letters for food aid worth US$6.9 million, highlighting close ties between Zimbabwe and China.
