In a highly anticipated comeback, iconic singer Celine Dion took center stage at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics on Friday, delivering a powerful performance that had fans around the world in tears.
Dion, who had announced her diagnosis with the rare neurological disorder Stiff Person Syndrome in 2022, closed out the over four-hour ceremony with a stunning rendition of Edith Piaf’s “L’Hymne à l’amour” from the first stage on the Eiffel Tower.
It marked her first live performance since going public with her health condition.
“Burst into tears at Celine Dion man,” one emotional fan tweeted, while another declared that the singer’s performance was “totally worth the wait.”
“Celine Dion with one of the most beautiful performances you will ever see,” a third fan praised. “With all that she has been through, she has me in tears.”
Prior to her show-stopping comeback, Dion had expressed her excitement to be part of the ceremony, tweeting, “I’m so happy to be here with you this week!” She also thanked local law enforcement for keeping the event safe.
The opening ceremony, which took place along the Seine River, also featured a pre-recorded performance by Lady Gaga, who took the stage in a black leotard to sing Zizi Jeanmaire’s “Mon Truc en Plumes.”
Instead of the traditional stadium format, the ceremony showcased Paris’ iconic landmarks and culture, with athletes parading along the waterway.
The torch relay saw legendary athletes like Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal, and Tony Parker pass the flame before it was lit by judo champion Teddy Riner and track star Marie-José Pérec.
For Dion’s legions of fans, her return to the stage was a triumphant and emotional moment, marking the comeback of one of music’s most beloved icons.
