Burns Patient Flees Hospital Over Unaffordable Medical Bills

A Gutu man suffering from severe burns fled Gutu Mission Hospital last week to escape mounting costs he could not afford.
Enock Chiurawa, of Chief Nyamandi’s area, sustained serious injuries after falling into a fire during an overnight prayer session.
Fearing an accumulating hospital bill of US$10 per day, he left the facility, explaining that staying without access to prescribed medication was futile.
According to information gathered by Mirror, patients at Gutu Mission Hospital receive their full bill only at discharge and are required to pay in full before leaving.
Faced with financial hardship, Chiurawa decided to leave before incurring a debt he could not settle.
Now in pain at home, he is appealing for assistance to afford treatment.
Gutu Mission Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Olenga Lohela described the situation as unfortunate, stating that while the hospital assists patients, some medications are unavailable at its pharmacy, requiring purchases from external suppliers.
Lohela urged Chiurawa to return for evaluation.
A medical practitioner, however, noted that without the required medication, returning to the hospital would not improve his condition, as treatment cannot proceed without prescribed drugs.
Zimbabwe’s healthcare system has been facing critical challenges, with hospitals nationwide suffering shortages of medication, equipment and medical staff.
Reports indicate that major hospitals such as Parirenyatwa and Sally Mugabe Central are struggling with funding gaps, forcing patients to pay high medical fees.
Despite complaints from citizens, government officials have dismissed concerns, insisting that hospital services remain adequate.
Chiurawa is now seeking assistance from well-wishers.
