Bulawayo’s Ipi Ntombi Production Heads to Harare for August Showcase

A reimagined version of the iconic musical Ipi Ntombi is set to grace Harare’s Reps Theatre on 15 and 16 August, as Bulawayo Theatre Club and acclaimed ensemble Khaya Arts bring the production to the capital.

The collaboration with Reps Theatre Club marks a cultural exchange between seasoned performers from Bulawayo and Harare’s local theatre community.

Composed in 1974 by South African writers Bertha Egnos Godfrey and Gail Lakie, Ipi Ntombi tells the evocative story of a young black man who leaves his rural home and wife to work in Johannesburg’s mines — a historical reflection of thousands of Southern African men during the apartheid era.

The narrative unfolds through a vibrant mix of musical genres including imbube, maskandi, and jazz, enhanced by traditional African dance interludes that bring the stage to life.

Directed by veteran playwright Sandy Bradnick, the production features musical direction by Vusi Ndebele and choreography led by Future Dube of Khaya Arts.

The play debuted in Bulawayo to enthusiastic reviews, blending theatrical nostalgia with contemporary staging.

Set construction and props are crafted by Candy and Amy Murrell, whose work lends visual authenticity and thematic depth to the performance.

According to Chronicle, the Bulawayo rendition was praised for balancing respect for the original with inventive adaptations suited to local audiences.

The Harare showcase is expected to build on that success, offering an immersive experience that celebrates Southern Africa’s musical heritage while showcasing homegrown theatrical talent.

As anticipation grows for the two-night engagement, organisers have promised a show rich in storytelling, choreography and live music — a tribute to one of the region’s most enduring stage productions.

Patrons are encouraged to secure tickets early, as demand is expected to surge in the weeks ahead.
