Bulawayo Car Heist Backfires: Thief Trapped Inside Stolen Mazda

Neighbours in Nkulumane woke to disbelief when a suspected car thief was discovered trapped inside a stolen Mazda B1600 after the engine cut off and the doors auto‑locked outside the owner’s yard.
The unusual scene quickly drew the attention of residents, who alerted police.
Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the suspect as Bongani Moyo (23), describing the incident as one of the most bizarre theft attempts in Bulawayo.
Inspector Msebele explained that the complainant had parked his white Mazda B1600 inside his yard before retiring for the night.
Moyo allegedly entered the unfenced property, used keys in his possession, and managed to start the vehicle.
The car rolled only a few metres before the engine suddenly cut off and the doors locked, leaving it stuck just outside the yard.
The owner rushed outside after hearing the sound of his car and found the Mazda parked at the gate with Moyo trapped inside, unable to escape.
Neighbours quickly gathered at the scene and helped restrain the suspect until police arrived.
Officers recovered two vehicle keys from Moyo, and the Mazda valued at US$2,000 was returned undamaged.
Inspector Msebele urged residents to strengthen home and vehicle security, warning against parking vehicles in open yards without proper measures.
Police advised residents to secure perimeter fencing, install lighting, and ensure vehicles are locked and immobilised at night.
