Buhera Woman Drowns in Well After Escaping Highway Suicide Attempt

BUHERA – A tragic scene unfolded in Buhera on Saturday when a 37-year-old woman, battling recurring suicidal thoughts, threw herself into a deep garden well and drowned — just hours after narrowly escaping death on a busy highway.

Earlier that day, Varaidzo Mubaiwa reportedly attempted to take her life by jumping into the path of oncoming vehicles along the Chivhu–Nyazura Highway.

Alert motorists managed to avoid hitting her, and she survived the incident unharmed.

Later in the afternoon, she made her way to Munyanyi Village, under Chief Chimombe, where she was seen diving into a well at the homestead of 62-year-old Noah Takaendesa.

The incident occurred around 2pm and was witnessed by a 17-year-old boy.

The matter was reported to ZRP Dorowa, and police investigations revealed that Mubaiwa had been struggling with suicidal thoughts since the beginning of the month.

According to H-Metro, authorities confirmed that her actions were not isolated, but part of a recurring mental health battle.

Her body was retrieved and transported to Murambinda Mission Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Acting Manicaland police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, urged communities to take mental health issues seriously.

“We encourage families and communities to seek timely counselling and professional support, and to remain alert to signs of emotional distress,” he said.
