“Bring Cutting-Edge Innovation Home to Propel Zimbabwe Forward” – Mnangagwa Tells Students in Russia

RUSSIA – President Mnangagwa has urged Zimbabwean students in Russia to apply their education in advanced technologies to drive innovation back home, supporting Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 and National Development Strategy.

While attending the 80th anniversary of Russia’s Victory Day commemorations on May 9, 2025, President Mnangagwa highlighted Zimbabwe’s historic ties with Russia.

He commended Russia for its steadfast support, including blocking sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe in the UN Security Council.

“You are not just academic learners but also key representatives of the strong relationship between Zimbabwe and Russia.

The knowledge you acquire here should serve as a strategic tool for nation-building and development, particularly in transformative sectors such as artificial intelligence”, he said.

The President stressed the importance of science and technology in shaping Zimbabwe’s future, citing recent advancements such as the launch of ZimSat-2 and progress in space technology.

He assured students that their concerns—raised through the Zimbabwean embassy were being addressed, pointing to a Memorandum of Understanding that now allows medical students to undergo practical training in Zimbabwe, with plans to expand the policy to other fields.

“My Government is ready to support your reintegration when you return. Zimbabwe’s future industries depend on your expertise”, he assured.

Encouraging students to remain patriotic, President Mnangagwa urged them to uphold Zimbabwean values, maintain discipline and work together on innovative ideas that can contribute to national growth.

He commended their voluntary efforts in assisting Zimbabwean delegations in Russia, acknowledging their commitment to national service.

According to The Herald, the engagement lasted over two hours, with students appreciating the opportunity to engage with the President directly.

Many praised his leadership and pledged to use their expertise to support Zimbabwe’s development upon their return.

Finance Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube also committed to increasing student stipends in response to their concerns.

Malachi Nyamukondiwa, a PhD candidate and leader of the Zimbabwean student community in Russia, expressed gratitude for the dialogue, describing it as a demonstration of the President’s commitment to youth empowerment.

“We deeply appreciate Your Excellency’s willingness to engage with us directly and address our concerns.

It shows your commitment to nurturing Zimbabwe’s future through education and innovation”, he said.

Reflecting on Zimbabwe’s recent independence celebrations, President Mnangagwa reiterated his vision of a nation built on knowledge, resilience and unity.

He urged students to use their expertise to advance Zimbabwe’s development, stating, “Together, let us ensure our nation continues to shine”.
