Breakup Turns Catastrophic as Man Sets Kumasi Homes Ablaze

GHANA – A 38-year-old man, Victor Antwi, is at the centre of a police manhunt in Kumasi after allegedly torching multiple homes in the Ahodwo High Tension community on Wednesday night.

The suspected arson followed the breakdown of his relationship with 25-year-old girlfriend, Gladys Sarfowaah, who reportedly ended the union due to sustained emotional abuse and threats, including one involving a firearm.

Eyewitnesses said Antwi struck while many residents were watching the UEFA Champions League match between Real Madrid and PSG.

He allegedly entered Sarfowaah’s apartment and deliberately started a fire that quickly spread across adjoining homes, leaving families displaced and homes destroyed.

According to GistReel, Sarfowaah had broken off the relationship out of fear for her safety after enduring months of verbal abuse and intimidation.

Firefighters responded quickly but fought the blaze for several hours before it was contained.

While no casualties were reported, the physical and emotional damage has left the community deeply shaken.

The incident highlights how unresolved emotional conflicts and unchecked domestic abuse can spill into wider social harm, turning private anguish into a public emergency.

The Ghana Police Service has stepped up efforts to apprehend Antwi, who fled the scene immediately after the fire was ignited.

Authorities are urging anyone with relevant information to come forward.

Meanwhile, emergency teams are providing shelter and assistance to affected residents as investigations into the incident continue.
