Koketso was reportedly assaulted, strangled, and beaten to death, allegedly by her boyfriend after an argument over her returning late from church.
The boyfriend, who initially fled the scene, was captured by angry residents the following day and handed over to the police. However, he was allegedly released shortly after his arrest, sparking outrage among the community.
Koketso’s aunt, Thato Mhlongo, revealed that her niece had lived in fear of her boyfriend, a man with a history of violent crimes. “He threatened her, saying he’d ‘deal with her’ if she ever left him,” Thato said, adding that Koketso’s life had been in constant danger.
Thato recounted the heart-wrenching moment she arrived at the crime scene after being notified by local patrollers. She found Koketso lying lifeless on the floor, covered in blood and bruises. Despite her desperate attempts to wake her niece, it was clear that she had been brutally murdered.
Initially, the boyfriend told police that Koketso had ingested poison, but upon further investigation, her injuries led authorities to change the case from an inquest to murder. The suspect appeared before the Orlando Magistrates Court on Friday, 11 October, and the case has been postponed to 24 October as the investigation continues.
