Boy (8) Drowns in Well While Fetching Water

CHIPINGE – In a heartbreaking incident, an 8-year-old minor from Lezia Farm in Chipinge lost his life while fetching water from a nearby well on March 1.

The minor slipped into the 3-meter-deep well at around 6 pm and drowned.

The minor’s siblings, aged 10 and 6, who witnessed the incident, reported that they were with the minor at the time of the tragedy.The 10-year-old sibling raised the alarm after the minor fell into the well, prompting two adults to rush to the scene and retrieve the body.

Manicaland Province acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the incident.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirms a tragic drowning incident which occurred at a well in Lezia Farm, Chipinge on 01/03/25. An 8-year-old boy drowned after slipping into the well while fetching water.”

“A report was filed at Grass Flats Police Post and the body was taken to Chipinge District Hospital for post-mortem”, he said.

Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka urged parents and guardians to be vigilant and ensure that children are not left unattended near water bodies.

“In many cases, these accidents can be avoided if children are properly supervised,” Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said.

This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of water safety and adult supervision to prevent unnecessary loss of life.
