Bonaqua triathlon billed for February despite cholera scare

Bonaqua triathlon billed for February despite cholera scare. The Bonaqua Triathlon Africa Cup is set to face a reduced turnout of elite athletes due to the ongoing cholera epidemic affecting Southern Africa.

The event, which is scheduled to take place on February 17 in Troutbeck in Nyanga, Zimbabwe, has seen many top competitors withdraw due to fears of exposure to the disease. Bonaqua Triathlon Africa Cup director Rick Fuilton has stated that the level of elite athlete participation has been adversely affected by the cholera epidemic, leading to fewer entries than hoped for in an Olympic qualification year.

While Zimbabwe will have Olympic hopeful Andy Kuipers competing for it in the elite category, many other athletes are skipping the event due to the outbreak. Despite the reduced number of elite athletes, the competition has attracted athletes from other countries such as Austria, Algeria, Ireland, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Mauritius, Netherlands, Namibia, Romania, South Africa, Tunisia and the UAE. Triathlon Zimbabwe and various sponsors, including Olympic sponsor Coca-Cola, remain committed to the professional and successful conduct of the competition.
