Blood at the Bira: Brothers Accused of Killing Sibling During Ceremony
MWENEZI – A sacred family ritual meant to honor ancestral spirits ended in tragedy when three brothers allegedly murdered their sibling during a violent dispute over the ceremony in Nyika Village, Chief Maranda area.
The Bira was organized by Hnulanini Gwezuva, father to the four men, as part of a traditional Shona practice to seek guidance from ancestors.
What was meant to be a moment of unity quickly turned tense when Takesure Gwezuva (41) stood alone in support of the ceremony, while his brothers—Coleen (42), Taona (45), and Sheunesu Gwezuva (29) strongly opposed it.
Police said the dispute escalated during the ritual.
In the chaos, Taona and Sheunesu allegedly grabbed Takesure and held him down, allowing Coleen to strike him once on the head with a large stick.
The impact inflicted a deep head wound, leaving Takesure unconscious and bleeding on the ground.
He was rushed to Mwenezi District Hospital at approximately 3p.m.
Despite medical efforts, he died the following day from the injuries sustained during the attack.
Masvingo Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Dhewa confirmed the incident and said:
“The incident occurred on October 18, 2025, around 2p.m during a family ritual in Nyika Village.
“Investigations are in progress, and we appeal to members of the public for any information that may help us arrest the three.”
The case has sparked widespread concern over how deeply held cultural beliefs can fracture families and lead to irreversible consequences.
What began as a spiritual gathering ended in violence and loss, exposing the fragile fault lines between tradition, belief, and family loyalty.
