Bindura Man Sentenced to 42 Years for Rape and Robbery

Chispen Gundani, a 24-year-old man, has been sentenced to 42 years in prison after being convicted of five counts of robbery and multiple charges of rape by the Bindura Magistrates’ Court. This follows a harrowing overnight attack on a 24-year-old tuckshop attendant at Batanai Compound.
The incident occurred in the early hours of August 22, 2025, when the victim was asleep in her workplace, as was customary with her employer’s arrangement. Gundani forcibly broke into the tuckshop, armed with a kitchen knife and wearing a head-torch. He ordered the victim to lie down and, after demanding money, turned violent when he discovered only USD4 was available.
Over the course of four hours, Gundani assaulted the victim multiple times, threatening her life while dragging her at knifepoint to locate more money from her employer’s residence. He also stole her Redmi Note 9 Pro cellphone and consumed beer from the tuckshop’s refrigerator. The victim was finally able to seek help at dawn when a customer arrived.

Gundani was apprehended by police on August 30, 2025, during a public disturbance in Kitsiyatota. His connection to the rape and robbery was established when the victim was able to unlock her stolen phone using her original password.
The total value of the items stolen was estimated at USD244. Following sentencing, the effective prison term holds at 42 years after concurrent sentences were applied.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe emphasized that this case highlights their commitment to pursuing sexual predators and violent offenders vigorously. They stressed the importance of ensuring that women and girls feel safe in their workplaces and homes, and affirmed their determination to impose severe penalties for those who prey on vulnerable victims.
