Bestiality rare in Masvingo Province, Police vow zero tolerance

Bestiality, a shocking form of animal cruelty has spurred authorities to intensify efforts to combat this crime. Although relatively rare in Masvingo, such cases have severe consequences. With laws in place, perpetrators face harsh penalties, ensuring justice for the voiceless victims.

Bestiality also termed zoophilia, refers to sexual activities carried out with non-human animals.

In an exclusive interview with AfroGazette News, Masvingo Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa revealed that bestiality cases are extremely rare in the province, however when reported, the police respond swiftly, taking immediate action to address these heinous crimes.

“Despite being rare in the province, bestiality is criminalized in Zimbabwe under the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23. Those found guilty face a fine of up to Level 14 or imprisonment for up to one year
or both.”

Inspector Dhewa urged the public to report any suspicious activity related to animal sexual abuse, ensuring the protection of animals and helping authorities bring offenders to justice.

“In the event of suspecting or witnessing animal molestation, report it immediately to the nearest police station. We will take decisive action against anyone found guilty of animal cruelty.”

While Masvingo Province has seen minimal cases, neighboring regions have faced similar challenges. In 2021, a Mwenezi man was sentenced to 280 hours of community service for sexually abusing a donkey stating he had no girlfriend and considered the animal his only partner. More recently, on October 18, 2024, a 20-year-old from Godlwayo Village 3 in Esigodini, Matabeleland South Province was arrested for raping a goat to death.
