Beitbridge ivory trafficker jailed 9 years

BEITBRIDGE – A Felabusi man has been sentenced to an effective nine-year jail term for possession of 4,824kg of raw ivory, valued at USD$820.20.
Malaki Moyo (30) was convicted by the Beitbridge Magistrate’s Court for unlawful possession of raw ivory after a full trial.
According to state papers, on October 16, 2024, at Dulibadzimu Rank in Beitbridge, detectives on patrol noticed the accused person carrying a green and white sack hidden behind his back.
The detectives became suspicious and approached him.
The court heard that the detectives identified themselves to the accused person before conducting a search.
During the search, detectives found a piece of raw unmarked ivory in the sack. The accused was then asked to produce documentation permitting him to possess the ivory but he failed to do so, leading to his immediate arrest.
The parks and wildlife officials assayed and examined the recovered ivory which weighed 4,824kg and was valued at USD $820.20.
