Beitbridge Heist Suspect Nabbed as Accomplice Escapes in Gunfire Drama

Beitbridge — A robbery suspect was arrested in dramatic fashion after a daring daylight heist near Mutsa Lodge, while his armed accomplice remains at large.
Farai Magobo (33), of Mukotosi Village, Chief Madhlangobe, Chivi, appeared before the Beitbridge Magistrates’ Court facing charges of robbery. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirmed the arrest, describing the case as a “well-executed but ultimately foiled robbery attempt.”
According to prosecutors, the crime unfolded on March 9, 2025, at around 5:35 PM when the complainant, a local employee responsible for delivering his employer’s daily takings, was intercepted after disembarking from a taxi at Dulibadzimu Bus Terminus.
“Magobo and his accomplice, who is still on the run, ambushed the complainant before he could reach his destination. The duo used pepper spray to incapacitate him, and the accomplice, armed with a firearm, menacingly pointed it at the victim,” said NPA spokesperson Tinashe Moyo.
The robbers forcibly took ZAR 20,000, concealed in a plastic food basin inside a green paper bag.
However, their getaway was cut short when the complainant raised the alarm, drawing the attention of bystanders who gave chase.
“It was a chaotic scene. During the pursuit, the armed suspect fired four shots in an attempt to shake off the crowd before disappearing into the bush,” added Moyo.
Despite the gunfire, Magobo was caught by the pursuing public. Upon his arrest, authorities recovered ZAR 15,000, hidden in his undergarments, along with the pepper spray used in the attack and a spent cartridge.
Magobo, who is now in custody, is expected back in court on March 25, 2025, for routine remand as investigations continue. Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies have launched a manhunt for his fugitive accomplice.
“This case highlights the brazen nature of criminal elements operating in border towns like Beitbridge. We urge members of the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities to authorities,” said Moyo.
With Beitbridge’s strategic location as a major transit hub, crime syndicates have increasingly targeted travelers and business operators. Law enforcement agencies remain on high alert as they track down the armed fugitive.
