Beer Fights Turn Deadly as Bar Killings Surge Nationwide
A spike in violent bar fights is turning Zimbabwe’s drinking spots into crime scenes, with police warning that petty arguments are increasingly ending in fatal attacks.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said law-enforcement authorities are deeply concerned by the surge in murders linked to disputes at bars, nightclubs and bottle stores.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is concerned with murder cases occurring across the country, particularly at beer drinking sites where petty disputes are escalating into fatal confrontations,” said Comm Nyathi.

The wave of violence began on 1 December in Beitbridge, where Taurai Hungwe (29) was stabbed in the chest with an okapi knife by a suspect identified only as Prosper following a bar altercation.
Hungwe died two days later, while the suspect fled and remains at large.
On 4 December, chaos erupted at Claremont Business Centre in Fort Rixon when a man known as Tshuks allegedly stormed a bottle store with four accomplices, attacking patrons before striking Kudakwashe Mudyanevana (27) with an axe. He died en route to Filabusi Hospital.
The killings continued on 5 December in Battlefields, where Leonard Chidhoma (45) was assaulted by two unidentified men who accused him of gossiping. His body was discovered in his room the next morning.
Bulawayo added to the grim tally on 7 December when Mongiwethu Godnows Dube (26) was killed after confronting Keith Dube (26) over spilled beer during a snooker match at a Magwegwe North sports bar.
Comm Nyathi urged the public to remain calm and resolve disputes peacefully.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police discourages violence and urges members of the public to resolve disputes amicably,” he said.
