The University of Zimbabwe (UZ) will go ahead with its 44th Graduation Ceremony on Friday after the Association of University Teachers (AUT) withdrew an urgent court bid to stop the event.
The AUT had filed the application at the High Court on 8 August 2025, seeking to interdict the ceremony.
However, during a case management meeting on Monday, judicial scrutiny exposed “substantive, procedural, and legal defects” in the case, prompting the union to withdraw its challenge.
The court ordered AUT to bear the wasted costs incurred by the 13 respondents, including the UZ.
In a notice issued after the ruling, the university said:

“The University of Zimbabwe assures its community that the graduation ceremony will proceed as planned.
“Graduands are encouraged to continue with their preparations, and all logistical arrangements remain firmly in place.”
The UZ added that the Bursar’s Department, Library, and Faculty Offices will remain open from 8am to 4:30pm during the public holiday to facilitate final clearance.
The ceremony, expected to draw thousands of guests and graduands, will take place on 15 August 2025.
