Arsenal Fans Fume Over Handball Controversy During Real Madrid Clash

Arsenal supporters erupted in frustration after a disputed handball incident went unpunished during their Champions League first-leg clash against Real Madrid.

The dramatic encounter unfolded at the Emirates Stadium yesterday, marking one of the most anticipated nights for the Gunners in recent years.

The controversy began when Declan Rice attempted a shot following a cutback from Gabriel Martinelli. His effort was blocked by Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio and the ball appeared to strike Asencio’s arm.

VAR intervened for an extensive review, raising hopes of a penalty decision. However, referee Irfan Peljto was not advised to consult the pitch-side monitor, and play resumed without a penalty being awarded.

Fans quickly voiced their outrage on X (formerly Twitter), with one Arsenal fan stating, “That’s a handball – the arm was clearly in an unnatural position.”

Another questioned, “How is that not a penalty? That’s blatantly obvious!”

Criticisms of the handball rule itself also emerged, with fans describing it as inconsistent and “broken these days.”

Despite the frustration over the decision, Arsenal delivered a commanding second-half display.

Declan Rice scored twice with two stunning free kicks-one in the 57th minute and another in the 70th. Mikel Merino added Arsenal’s third goal in the 75th minute, converting a precise pass from Lewis-Skelly to cap off an impressive 3-0 victory for the Gunners.

The decisive win gives Arsenal a strong advantage heading into the second leg at the Santiago Bernabéu.

However, the handball controversy has reignited debates about the application of VAR and the clarity of handball regulations in high-stakes matches.

Fans and pundits alike are calling for more consistency and transparency in officiating.

As Arsenal look ahead to the return leg, supporters will take pride in their team’s performance while hoping for officiating improvements to avoid future frustrations.
