A light-hearted football discussion turned fatal when 22-year-old Benjamin Okello lost his life following a scuffle at Kyobugombe Trading Centre in Western Uganda. The incident occurred on Sunday, October 27, after a match between Arsenal and Liverpool ended in a 2-2 draw.
Witnesses reported that Okello, a Manchester United supporter, celebrated joyfully when Liverpool’s Mo Salah scored a late equalizer. In a moment of banter, he threw popcorn at an Arsenal fan, which escalated tensions between the two.
The situation took a violent turn after the match, resulting in Okello being struck with a stick, leading to his death.
Kaharo Sub County Chairperson provided details about the incident, stating, “I received information about a fight on Sunday night.
One man was taken to Bukinda Health Centre and later referred to Rugarama Regional Referral Hospital, where he died.”
The altercation began in a video hall where fans were watching the match. After Liverpool’s equalizer, Okello’s celebrations angered the Arsenal supporter, ultimately sparking a physical confrontation.
The suspect, identified only as Onan, is reportedly a known criminal in the Kaharo Sub County area. The police in Kabale District have launched a manhunt for him.
District Police Commander Joseph Bakaleke commented, “One boy assaulted the other, leading to serious injuries. We urge anyone with information to come forward.”
Relatives of the deceased are demanding justice, expressing frustration over the suspect still being at large. Police are encouraging witnesses to assist in the investigation as they continue their search for Onan.
