Arrest Warrant Issued for Former RBZ Governor Gideon Gono

A warrant has been issued for the arrest of former Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) governor Gideon Gono after he failed to appear at the Harare Magistrates Courts on Monday in a fraud case related to the ownership of Valley Lodge.

The case dates back to 2017 and centers on Gono’s allegations that local business owners Beverly Aisha Makoni and Clark Makoni illegally altered the directorship of Valley Lodge, which he claims still belongs to him.

Gono was expected to testify in court last week, but his absence has led to the issuance of the arrest warrant.

Prosecutor Sithembiso Moyo attributed delays in the case to an incomplete docket that has been pending since last year. Gono’s no-show at the court has drawn attention, as the case has attracted significant public interest.

The Makonis are currently facing charges of fraud over the ownership of Valley Lodge. They maintain that Gono’s accusations are a result of their business dealings and alleged political connections, describing the charges as “malicious, frivolous, and vexatious.” They further accuse law enforcement of colluding with Gono to arrest them without proper evidence.

Gono’s representative, George Mashonganyika, received the warrant on behalf of the former central bank chief, but has not commented on Gono’s absence or the next steps in addressing the charges.

This legal battle highlights ongoing tensions in Zimbabwe’s business environment, especially where ownership disputes and political influences intersect.

Both the prosecution and the defense are expected to face further scrutiny as the case progresses.
