Amorim Hails Zirkzee’s Smart Play in Draw with Liverpool

Manchester United’s head coach, Ruben Amorim, praised Joshua Zirkzee for making a “perfect decision” during a key moment in the game against Liverpool.

Zirkzee, who came on as a substitute, had a chance to score in the 97th minute but instead chose to pass the ball to Harry Maguire.

Unfortunately, Maguire missed the shot, sending the ball over the crossbar with the score tied at 2-2.

Zirkzee received cheers from United fans at Anfield, especially after being booed at Old Trafford just a week earlier. Even though he could have taken the shot himself, Zirkzee decided to assist the unmarked Maguire to his left.

Amorim commented, “I think it was the perfect decision. He could have shot but chose to pass. The ball was slow for Harry to score, but I believe Josh made a good choice.”

Since Amorim took over two months ago, Manuel Ugarte has been a standout player, showing strong performances, including at Anfield.

While Ugarte played under Amorim at Sporting, the coach wanted to highlight the whole team’s effort. “I don’t want to just talk about Ugarte; he’s the only player I know really well. Everyone, even those on the bench, faced the competition differently today.”

Amorim also avoided discussing the penalty given to Liverpool. The penalty came after Alexis Mac Allister’s header hit Matthijs de Ligt’s arm.

Referee Michael Oliver did not award a penalty at first but later changed his mind after checking with VAR. Mohamed Salah then scored from the penalty spot in the 70th minute.

“I didn’t see the footage,” Amorim said. “It looked like the ball touched something before hitting the hand. It was unfortunate, especially since touching the ball can change its direction. Even when we were down 2-1, we felt we could equalize and maybe even win.”

The match ended in a dramatic draw, leaving both teams looking for improvement as they prepare for their next games.
