Air Force Stalwart AVM Winnie Mandeya Dies at 64

The Air Force of Zimbabwe is mourning the death of Retired Air Vice Marshal Winnie Cabby Mandeya (64), a decorated liberation war heroine and a pioneer in the country’s military history.

In a statement issued yesterday, Commander Air Force of Zimbabwe, Air Marshal John Jacob Nzvede, described AVM Mandeya as a “dedicated and principled officer” whose service left an indelible mark on the force.

“The entire Air Force of Zimbabwe family is deeply saddened by the passing of AVM Winnie Mandeya (Retired), who served the organisation with distinction,” said Air Marshal Nzvede.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Mandeya family and the broader Air Force community. May the Lord Almighty provide comfort during this painful time.”

A solemn funeral parade in her honour will be held today at Manyame Air Force Base, where comrades, family, and friends will celebrate a life of courage, sacrifice, and service.

AVM Mandeya’s journey of heroism began on September 29, 1975, when she joined the liberation struggle, undergoing rigorous training at Nachingweya Camp in Tanzania.

She later operated in Gaza Province until 1978, before being selected for specialist training in nursing.

Following independence, she briefly served in the President’s Department, where she contributed to the 1981 Commission of Inquiry into missing persons.

Her commitment to nation-building saw her transfer to the Air Force of Zimbabwe on July 1, 1984, where she rose through the ranks, setting an inspiring example until her retirement.

A trailblazer for women in the military, AVM Mandeya’s legacy is etched in the annals of Zimbabwe’s history—a fearless fighter, a loyal officer, and a patriot to the end.
