‘Adam and Eve Ate Nothing in the Garden’: Nigerian Pastor

Pastor Abel Damina, a prominent Nigerian cleric, has ignited a heated debate after asserting that Adam and Eve did not eat anything in the Garden of Eden, a statement he claims resulted in God cursing the earth.
During a recent sermon at his church, Damina challenged his congregation, asking if anyone was present when Adam and Eve were in the garden to verify his assertion that they did not consume anything harmful.
“Adam and Eve ate nothing. They didn’t eat anything. Were you there? You were not there. They ate nothing. So how do we know whether they ate anything? Jesus was there. So was Jesus in the Garden of Eden? Yes! Jesus explained to us what happened,” he said, referencing Mark 17:18.
Damina went on to discuss the nature of sin, arguing that if Adam and Eve had eaten something, they would not be considered sinners.
He emphasized that consumption does not define one’s moral standing, stating, “Do you realize that if Adam and Eve had eaten something, they wouldn’t be considered sinners? It’s not what one consumes that defines them as a sinner. You can’t become a sinner by eating or drinking. I’ve said before that alcohol is not a sin, and smoking cigars is not a sin either.”
He concluded with a cautionary note, saying, “Am I saying you should smoke? You should have sense from your father’s house to know that cigars will cut your life.”
The pastor’s remarks have drawn both support and criticism, highlighting the ongoing discourse surrounding interpretations of biblical texts in contemporary society.
