ACZ to Build New Runway, Cargo Terminal at Robert Gabriel Mugabe Int Airport

The Airports Company of Zimbabwe (ACZ) has unveiled an ambitious expansion project at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International (RGMI) Airport, announcing plans to construct a secondary runway and a new cargo terminal as part of efforts to boost global trade and economic growth.

In a statement, ACZ said the proposed developments will occupy all land within the airport’s restricted Red Zone, triggering consultations with affected landowners over compensation.

“It is hereby notified that the Airports Company of Zimbabwe (Private) Limited (“ACZ”) is now working on the development of a secondary runway and cargo terminal, which will occupy all land in the restricted Red Zone of the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport,” the company said.

ACZ directed all affected landowners and occupiers to report to its offices at the 3rd Level, International Terminal Building at RGMI Airport in Harare within 30 days of the gazetting of the notice for compensation discussions.

The project is being undertaken in terms of Section 26 of the Regional, Town and Country Planning Act [Chapter 29:12], Local Subject Plan Number 31, and Section 86 of the Civil Aviation Aerodromes Regulations of 2018 (Statutory Instrument 211 of 2018).

ACZ said the expansion is expected to significantly enhance Zimbabwe’s aviation infrastructure and position the country as a stronger logistics and trade hub.

“This development is expected to serve as a vital catalyst for global trade and economic development, benefiting local, regional, and national levels,” the statement read.

The RGMI Airport has in recent years undergone major upgrades, including terminal expansions and facelift projects, as authorities pursue a broader strategy to modernise Zimbabwe’s aviation sector and attract international traffic.
