Accra Fisherman Assaults Wife Carrying Baby, Remanded After Viral Video Outcry

GHANA – A Gender Violence Court in Accra has remanded 29-year-old Nii Baah Afful, a fisherman, into custody for allegedly assaulting his partner in an incident captured on a widely circulated video.
Afful is scheduled to reappear in court on April 9, 2025.
The case has sparked significant public outrage, renewing focus on the issue of domestic violence in Ghana.
The assault occurred on March 20, 2025, in Korle Gonno, Accra, following a domestic dispute.
lnvestigations revealed that the victim, 21-year-old Francisca Aryee, attempted to leave their shared home for her mother’s residence while carrying their 8-month-old baby.
Afful allegedly pursued and attacked her. The two have been cohabiting and share two children.
Afful was arrested on March 22, 2025, at 5 p.m. by the Accra Regional Police Command’s Intelligence Unit. He has since been detained as investigations continue. (Source: Class FM Online)
Authorities have also traced Aryee, who is currently receiving medical attention and counseling to aid her recovery from the traumatic incident.
“The swift action taken by the Accra Regional Police Command demonstrates its commitment to ensuring justice and safety for all citizens,” said Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Public Affairs Directorate, in a statement dated March 25, 2025.
The video, which circulated widely on social media, has sparked outrage among community members and civil society organizations, with many calling for stricter measures to protect victims of domestic violence.
