75-Year-Old Man Jailed for Assaulting Wife After Violating Protection Order

A 75-year-old Avondale man has been jailed for a total of 120 days after violating a protection order and physically assaulting his 73-year-old wife, in a case that has sparked outrage and renewed calls to end domestic violence affecting older women.
The sentence was delivered by the Harare Magistrates’ Court, following an alarming incident that unfolded on 16 November 2025 at the couple’s home.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ), the victim had already secured a Protection Order against her husband on 28 August 2025, barring him from insulting, threatening, or assaulting her. But on the night in question, the elderly offender reportedly launched into an unprovoked outburst, accusing his wife of being a witch.
Their 42-year-old son attempted to intervene — but the enraged man could not be restrained. He allegedly turned violent and began punching his wife with his fists, ignoring the existing court order meant to protect her.
The court imposed a 30-day jail term, and a previously suspended 90-day imprisonment was activated, bringing his total sentence to 120 days behind bars.
