4 Children Dead, 12 Hospitalized As Boat Capsize
A tragic boat accident in Mashayar Garba Rogo, Bukkuyum Local Government Area of Zamfara State, has left four children dead and 12 others hospitalized.
The boat, carrying 46 passengers, capsized at around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 17, 2024. This incident comes just a week after a similar disaster in Gummi Local Government Area claimed over 30 lives.
Tragedy Strikes Zamfara
Local resident Malam Aliyu Umar Bukkuyum reported that two of the children’s bodies were recovered, while the other two remain missing. Twelve passengers, currently unconscious, are receiving treatment at the General Hospital in Bukkuyum.
Buhari Usman, a survivor known locally as Messi, shared that the boat had about 50 passengers, mostly children, heading to their farms across the Zamfara River. He explained that the boat began to capsize mid-journey despite efforts by the captains to regain control. Usman managed to rescue 12 children and several adults but confirmed that four tragically lost their lives.
Hon. Nasiru Muhammad, Sole Administrator of Bukkuyum, attributed the accident to overloading and a failure to follow safety guidelines. He assured the public that the government is taking care of the rescued victims and will implement measures to prevent future incidents.
Search efforts continue to locate the two missing passengers.
