Forex Dealer Fails to Find Witness, Faces Court Deadline

$30k Lobola Scandal

A forex dealer, Rangarirai Shumbairerwa (28), who allegedly diverted US$30,000 meant for business to pay lobola for his wife, is struggling to locate his key witness.

Shumbairerwa, currently on trial for theft of trust property, appeared before Harare magistrate Ethel Chichera, requesting a postponement due to his failure to find witness Salisio Janyure, a high-ranking Air Force of Zimbabwe official and ex-husband of the complainant, Tamai Dadirai.

Shumbairerwa claimed Janyure gave him the money, but the court expressed skepticism, questioning why Janyure would delay testifying in a case involving such a large sum.

Magistrate Chichera granted a final postponement to next Tuesday, warning Shumbairerwa that the defense case would close if Janyure doesn’t appear.

According to the State, Shumbairerwa received US$30,000 from Dadirai at Nyahokwe Mall, Harare, in October last year.

Shumbairerwa agreed to use the money to buy goods like clothes and blankets for Dadirai’s shop, but instead, he diverted it to fund his traditional marriage ceremony.

He offered to repay the money in installments, but he has failed to make any payments over the past six months. So far, he has not returned any of the US$30,000.
