The Odyssey, a cruise ship operated by Villa Vie Residences, paid up to £27,000 a month for a three-year journey around the world. Instead, they’ve spent the last three months docked in Belfast due to issues with the ship’s rudders and gearbox.
Originally set to depart on May 30, the ship remains anchored in Belfast, forcing passengers to swap tropical cocktails for pints of Guinness and fish and chips.
While they can enjoy the ship’s amenities during the day, including its restaurants, lounges, and spa, they must disembark at night to stay in local hotels.
Some passengers, like Lanette Canen and Johan Bodin, chose to explore Europe, while others are making the best of their time in Belfast. Holly Hennessy, 67, from Florida, has been adjusting to the colder climate with the help of vitamin D tablets.
Despite the setback, many are trying to stay positive, exploring the city and joking about becoming honorary residents of Ireland.
The Odyssey, built in 1993 with a capacity of nearly 1,000 passengers, offered the chance to buy cabins for the ship’s 15-year lifespan.
With most passengers planning to stay on board for the full world tour, the unexpected delay has left them far from the adventure they anticipated.
