A total of 17 individuals were taken into custody by Harare police for capturing images of a recent road traffic accident with their smartphones.

The incident occurred when a commuter omnibus, whose driver was attempting to evade arrest, collided with a truck at the intersection of Robert Mugabe Road and Sam Nujoma Street in Harare’s central business district.

According to eyewitnesses, police swiftly rounded up the individuals, who were described as “self-styled journalists,” and confiscated their cellphones.

The arrests come amid growing concerns over the proliferation of graphic images and videos of accident scenes on social media, which authorities say is causing “alarm and despondency” among the public.

While the police have yet to comment on the specifics of the arrests, the incident has sparked debate about the role of citizen journalism and the limits of free expression in the digital age.
