16 Students Die in Kenyan Girls’ School Dormitory Fire – At least 16 students have died following a devastating fire that swept through a dormitory at in Kenya, in a tragedy that has left the nation in mourning.
According to reports, the fire broke out around 1am on Thursday and was officially reported at approximately 3:30am, according to the .
Several students were also injured in the inferno, which engulfed a packed dormitory housing more than 200 learners. The injured were rushed to various hospitals for treatment.

Emergency response teams were immediately dispatched to the school after the blaze was reported. Authorities initially feared that at least 15 students had lost their lives, before police later confirmed that the death toll had risen to approximately 16.
In a statement, the Kenya Red Cross said: “Following a fire incident reported at around 3:30am at Utumishi Girls Academy in Nakuru County, Kenya Red Cross responded to support the ongoing emergency response.”
The organisation added: “Our first responders, EMS Kenya ambulance crew and our psychosocial support personnel are currently on the ground supporting affected students alongside other responders and relevant authorities.”
Authorities said investigations into the cause of the fire are still underway, while emergency teams continue assisting affected students and families.
Kenyan President also expressed condolences following the tragedy.
“Our hearts and prayers are with the families who have lost their beloved daughters in the tragic fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil,” Ruto said.
“No words can truly ease the pain of losing young lives filled with promise, hope, and dreams for the future.”
The President added that government efforts were currently focused on rescue operations, treatment of the injured, and supporting affected families.
“Our immediate attention is focused on the rescue of those affected, the treatment of the injured, and support for their families, while investigations continue into the cause of the fire. As a nation, we mourn with the parents, guardians, teachers, and fellow students who are enduring this unimaginable tragedy,” he said.
