10-Year-Old Mistakenly Drinks Toilet Cleaner, Family Seeks Urgent Medical Assistance

MWENEZI – A 10-year-old boy from Mwenezi, Zile Samuel Jazi, is in dire need of financial assistance after mistakenly consuming toilet disinfectant at school, severely damaging his digestive system.
The incident occurred on February 27 at St Vitalis Primary School when Zile, a Grade Five pupil, unknowingly drank the harmful chemical while searching for water after sports practice.
Mistaking the disinfectant for drinking water, he experienced an intense burning sensation and attempted to spit it out, but some had already passed down his digestive tract, causing serious internal injuries.
Initially treated at Mwenezi Hospital, Zile’s condition worsened at home, leading to persistent vomiting.
Medical examinations confirmed extensive damage, requiring doctors to place him on tube feeding.
His father, Leonard Thembani Jazi, revealed that the family has spent US$2,400 on medical expenses, with an estimated US$3,500 still needed for surgery and essential medical supplies.
The cost of Zile’s specialized feeding formula, which he relies on for nutrition, remains another financial strain, as each 400-gram supply costs US$18 and lasts only two and a half days.
Unable to attend school, Zile has missed exams, delaying his education. His doctor’s family has stepped in to help with transport for medical reviews, as he cannot travel by public transport.
TellZim News reports that his surgery is expected to take place in the coming weeks, depending on the availability of funds.
